The Texas Center for the Book is delighted to announce the opening of the Letters About Literature Texas writing contest for 2025-2026. Texas 4th through 12th graders are invited to participate in this annual writing competition.
Students select a book, book series, essay, play, poem, short story or speech and write a letter to an author—living or dead—explaining how his or her work changed their view of themselves or the world.
The theme of Letters About Literature is “Read. Be Inspired. Write Back.”
Students may have a strong connection to the theme of the work or with a particular character. They may write about challenging events in their lives that relate to a book they have read. The possibilities are limitless, and the Center looks forward to reading this year’s entries.
There are three categories of competition: grades 4-6, grades 7-8, and grades 9-12. The contest is open to all Texas students, including public, private, and homeschool.
First-place winners receive $300. Second-place winners receive $200, and third-place winners receive $100. Additionally, the Center will give $300 grants to the school libraries of each first-place winner (or for homeschoolers, their public library.) First-place winners will also receive a travel stipend ($400) to go towards travel to the Texas Library Association Annual Conference in Houston in March 2026. The winning students will be recognized in a ceremony at the conference.
Many thanks to the Texas Library and Archives Foundation for their support of the Letters About Literature Texas program.
Application information The online submission portal (https://xtexasstatelibrary.submittable.com/submit) will open on Monday, November 3, 2025. If you have not entered before, you will need to create a free Submittable account in order to apply. The deadline is 6:00 p.m. Central time on Monday, January 26, 2026.
Applications are accepted only through the portal. Students younger than age 13 must also submit a signed permission form in order to enter the contest.
Every year, each grade level puts together a basket to donate to the silent auction. This year 5th grade has been assigned the theme: Stuff the Locker! Think of it as our own playful twist on Storage Wars—you’ll get a peek at what’s inside the locker, you’ll see some exciting items up front… but the real mystery is what treasures might be hiding in the back.
To keep things simple and consistent, we are collecting money only for this basket. The Advancement Team will take all contributions and shop to create an amazing, high‑value locker experience for the auction.
All cash donations are due by February 5th.
Please send contributions directly to Angela Falcon using any of the following:
Venmo or PayPal: @dnafalcon
Zelle: 281‑635‑4537
Please add "5th Grade Gala Basket Donation" to your donation memo!
Thank you so much for helping make our class basket a standout this year. Your support truly makes a difference, and we can’t wait to see what surprises end up in our locker!
Help our homerooms reach our goal for a hot chocolate party! A gift of $50 or more counts towards participation.
You can give today at give.trinityklein.org and selecting "TKLS Annual Fund".
PSIA
If you have a child who loves to be challenged academically, consider signing him or her up for PSIA (Private Schools Interscholastic Association). Students in PSIA participate in a day of academic competitions against other private and parochial schools in our area.
The contests are very diverse, spanning 18 different subject areas, including speech, writing, art, spelling, math, and science. Contests vary by grade level.
If you have questions, please contact Kim Schleicher at schleicherk@trinityklein.org.
Dress Code
The 2025-26 Dress Code Regulations can be found HERE. Policing dress code takes time away from the teaching and learning that we value at Trinity Klein. Please review the dress code linked above and ensure that your student is coming to campus dressed in accordance with those standards each day. We need your help to make our current dress code work!
You can order Trinity Polos or uniform-style bottoms online at Flynn O'Hara Shop or visit their store front in Houston.
5th Grade Homework Expectations
Homework is a very important part of TKLS education. Your child will have homework and quizzes weekly. Our homework calendar will let you know assignments, quizzes and tests that are coming up and when they will be due. Please help your child to get in the habit of carving out time to study and complete homework. We do offer daily study halls for students who find it difficult to complete work or study at home. If assignments are turned in late, you will receive a notification and 10 points will be deducted from your child's grade for that assignment. A link is also located in the Resource Documents section.
How to Access Clever from Home
The easiest way to access Clever (at home OR school) is via a student’s “Clever badge” (a QR code that students should keep in their binder). There is an alternate method if the badge is unavailable. See steps below:
Go to www.clever.com
Click “log in as a student”
Search for “Trinity Klein Lutheran School, TX”
Click “Clever badge log in” (along right side)** (See below if you don’t have a badge or it doesn’t work.)
Hold Clever QR code (should be in students’ binder, on a lanyard) up to your computer camera.
You should now see all of the educational apps that have been loaded for your child. The most commonly used app will be Google Classroom.
**If you don’t have a Clever badge, you can “sign in with Google.” You will use your child’s Trinity email address (firstname.lastname@tkeagles.org) and password. Note that the email address uses the full first name, not a nickname.
**If there is a problem with access in Google Classroom, start by double checking that your child is logged into Google through their Trinity account. (HINT: Look for the profile picture near the nine-dot “waffle” when you are on Google. Many times parents will see that Google has defaulted to their account or to their child’s personal account. Your child’s profile picture for their Trinity account should be their first-name initial. When you hover over the profile picture, it should show your child’s Trinity email address. If it does not show, click the profile picture and click “add account” to enter your child’s information.
